Obstetrics The new Aspen Birth Center at Aspen Valley Hospital will open in March of 2008. This 5,800 square foot expansion includes five single-occupancy labor, delivery, and recovery rooms with therapeutic whirlpool tubs; four single-occupancy postpartum rooms; and an antepartum room for patients being observed prior to active labor. Each room was designed to provide patients and their families with a spacious, comfortable, home-like environment, yet at the same time accommodate all of their medical needs. In March 2008, the renovation of the existing obstetrical department will also begin, ultimately adding a family waiting area and a large centrally located nursery with an isolation area to the Birth Center. The entire department will be self-contained, thus enhancing patient safety, privacy, and security. In addition to the new facility, women who have their babies at the Aspen Birth Center benefit from low nurse:patient ratios (often 1:1) during labor and delivery. This personalized care is greatly appreciated by new mothers and their families. For pain management, an important component of the birthing experience, AVH nurses are familiar with a variety of non-interventional pain management techniques, and the anesthesia department is available around-the-clock for those desiring epidural anesthesia. Preparation for the big day is also part of the AVH experience, with a variety of classes offered by certified childbirth educators. Classes offered include:
