Healthy Aging for the Mind and Body While Living at Altitude

Aging at Altitude

Healthy Aging for the Mind and Body While Living at Altitude

by Aspen Valley Hospital

November 10, 2019

In the Roaring Fork Valley, seniors often note they’re not getting older; they’re simply getting better. Surrounded by breathtaking vistas, winding walking paths, and inherent community spirit, it’s easy to see why they feel this way. During the “off-season”, it’s a great time to reflect on what healthy aging means, especially while living at altitude.

A great place to start the journey to healthy aging at altitude is at
Whitcomb Terrace, the only nonprofit organization providing assisted living services in the Roaring Fork Valley, and a valued part of Aspen Valley Hospital’s Network of Care. Whitcomb Terrace is a uniquely inviting senior living facility, serving not only its residents, but also their families and even their pets. Director Maggie Gerardi, who has been with the organization since 2001, likes to help families find opportunities that allow multiple generations of families to enjoy their time together

Focus on Socialization

Living at altitude comes with great advantages. But less oxygen in the air can also mean it’s just a little bit harder to get out for that daily walk. Isolation is something to avoid as we get older. It’s important for seniors to look to friends, family, and community to help maintain a healthy and engaging active lifestyle. For Whitcomb Terrace residents, this comes in the form of group dining and a convenient location close to town that makes it easy to keep up with friends, family, and favorite activities. Says Maggie, “Doing the things our residents love to do is a part of life at Whitcomb Terrace.”

Eat Well and Drink Plenty of Water

It goes without saying that maintaining a healthy diet and staying adequately hydrated are elemental to living and aging well at altitude. As we get older, it can be harder to find the time, motivation, and energy to prepare meals that fit the bill. For those looking for assistance with daily activities so they can focus on the things they truly enjoy, Whitcomb Terrace once again offers a variety of valuable support tools. Continues Maggie, “We’re so fortunate to have great chefs who spoil us with three meals a day. They love to cook to the residents’ tastes. When a new resident arrives, the chef will ask them what they like and then create that dish.”

Turning eating well into something we want to do instead of something we have to do as we get older is a great way to maintain health and wellness.

Listen to Your Body

Not letting our years get in the way of our desire to make the most of them is a great thing. However, it’s important to listen to your body as you’re walking, hiking, climbing, skiing, or simply keeping up with the pup or grand kids. The primary care team at Aspen Valley Hospital and the senior living team at Whitcomb Terrace are excellent resources for helping establish a personalized wellness path.

Additionally, the Aspen Valley Health Fair is a great place for deeply discounted lab tests that help you take charge of your health.

Enjoy Living Your Best Life!

Identify your favorite hobbies, activities, community events, and social circles, then enjoy them! Happiness contributes to mental and physical health. For Whitcomb Terrace residents, this means having a variety of activities and outings at your fingertips, including outdoor excursions, museum and gallery visits, book clubs and exercise classes, and card and board games.
