Dr. Mark McMellen is a Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon as well as Surgical Intensivist at St. Anthony’s Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center in Lakewood, Colorado. He is board certified by The American Board of Surgery in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. McMellen has a passion for the care of traumatically injured patients as well as those with acute surgical needs. He enjoys providing the highest quality surgical care for people in their times of need and is dedicated to helping patients recover and regain their pre-injury lifestyle. He recognizes that patients who meet him are typically not doing so of their own accord and he is dedicated to treating them with empathy and compassion. Dr. McMellen also has a passion for teaching the next generation of surgeons and is an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor.

Dr. McMellen grew up in the small rural town of Slater, Missouri. After high school he attended a six-year combined MD/BLA program at the University of Missouri Kansas City. Following completion of this program, he spent two years as a preliminary resident at Emory University in the department of Surgery. He then completed two years of basic science research in gut failure at Washington University in St. Louis. This was followed by a year of Pediatric Trauma at Saint Louis University Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. He then finished his General Surgery Residency at Saint Louis University. He was appointed the Administrative Chief Resident position in his final year of Residency. After completion of residency he completed a year long fellowship in Pediatric Intensive Care and Trauma at Saint Louis University Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, followed by a year of Surgical Critical Care at Saint Louis University. Dr. McMellen practiced for four years in the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Department at Mercy Hospital St. Louis prior to joining the Surgical Specialists of Colorado.

When Dr. McMellen is not in the hospital, he enjoys being a father to two wonderful children and a husband to his phenomenal wife. He enjoys hiking and camping with his family and teaching his children his love for the game of golf. While new to Colorado, he is looking forward to beauty and activities the state has to offer.
