BIO

Dr. Michael Kem is an anesthesiologist who joined the staff at Aspen Valley Hospital in 2022. His journey to the Roaring Fork Valley included a 2,200-mile drive across the country in his Subaru, a familiar story for many who have moved here over the years. Dr. Kem practiced for more than six years at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, serving rural and urban communities in Vermont and the Adirondack region of upstate New York from the only Level I trauma center in its wide catchment area. He feels particularly fortunate to have developed skills in regional anesthesia which reduces the need for heavier anesthetics including opioids, as well as obstetric and pediatric anesthesia which allow him to work with mothers and children. Dr. Kem was born and raised in Denver. As an undergraduate at Princeton he returned to Colorado whenever he could, at one point working at a restaurant and a ski shop in Summit County. After earning his bachelor’s degree in 2003, he spent several years working in finance in Southeast Asia before returning to study medicine at the University of Colorado. As a medical student he performed clinical rotations at rural hospitals across the Western Slope, including Meeker, Montrose, and Cortez. After graduating from CU in 2016 with an MD and MBA, he completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Vermont Medical Center, a program uniquely situated in a relatively rural and mountainous region reminiscent of western Colorado. Some of Dr. Kem’s first turns on skis as a young child were at the Snowmass ski area. He is extremely excited to be back in the Roaring Fork Valley with its inspiring environment, culture and world-class orthopaedic, sports medicine and pain management services. He is proficient in Spanish, and has the skills to understand and speak Thai at a basic level.
