Meet Dr. Edward Wiese, AVH’s new internal medicine physician

by Aspen Valley Hospital

October 29, 2019

When Edward Wiese, MD, was growing up in western Canada, he loved to hike, fish, camp and ski in the mountains. So, when he recently had an opportunity to move to the Aspen area, Dr. Wiese and his wife, Karen, jumped at the prospect.

Today, Dr. Wiese is Aspen Valley Primary Care’s newest primary care physician (PCP). In addition to the appeal of living in a picturesque and active community again, Dr. Wiese said he was also attracted to the area because of Aspen Valley Hospital’s emphasis on population health.

This healthcare model promotes the concept that when everybody in our community has convenient access to high-quality healthcare, the entire population benefits. Having a readily available team of PCPs is an essential component of population health.

“AVH is at the forefront of this movement, moving from an emphasis on treating sickness to promoting wellness,” Dr. Wiese said. “When patients walk into our office, we are not treating only the one illness that brings them in. We explore the overall health and well-being of our patients as well. For example, maybe they are due for a blood test, a vaccination or a health screening based on their age or gender. We want to help them maintain their wellness going forward.”

Dr. Wiese has more than 27 years of medical experience. A graduate of Schulich School of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario, he practiced internal medicine in Ashtabula, Ohio, before joining the AVH medical staff. As an internist, he provided comprehensive and long-term medical care for patients, which is very similar to his role at Aspen Valley Primary Care.

Being a good listener and treating each patient as an individual are two important characteristics of a PCP, according to Dr. Wiese. “We don’t just look at a patient as a diabetic or someone with high blood pressure. They may have a cultural, social or financial issue that impacts their health. My role is to quarterback them through the process so they are at ease and feel deeply invested in their care and well-being.”

Dr. Wiese is currently accepting new patients and can be reached at 970.279.4111.
