Is It Time to Reset Your Healthy Palate?

Raise your hand if the excesses of holiday feasting have caught up with you.

If you didn’t raise your hand, well, there’s always next year.

The festive gauntlet between Thanksgiving and the New Year often includes seconds of mashed potatoes with lashings of gravy, “just one more” latke and nogs aplenty. We’re ambushed by plates of frosted holiday cookies, shiny foil-wrapped chocolates left wantonly around the house, the office and even the bank. For many of us our age-old tradition of feasting often leaves us with food cravings, weight gain, fatigue, headaches, joint pains, and basically not feeling our best. On the bright side, this malaise serves as a motivation to reset and recommit to our healthy lifestyle habits so we can enjoy the fleeting gifts of winter.

Enjoy lots of raw vegetables and fruit from the color of the rainbow. Think red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Optimize your liver and kidneys with colorful food choices to remove waste and reduce inflammation. Be sure and include 1 to 2 cups of cruciferous vegetables from the cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower family every day. Add flavorful sulfur-containing veggies, such as onions and garlic so you get the necessary nutrients for liver detoxification to clear out chemicals and waste products.

Exercise—move your body to get the lymph system moving. This helps the body pick up and excrete waste more efficiently. Walk 10-30 minutes per day and add some more intense workouts to amplify your results. Try these ski conditioning exercises from Aspen Valley Hospital physical therapist and ski patroller, Jack Michael, DPT to power up your strength throughout the ski season.

Drink plenty of water—at least 0.5-1 ounces of water per pound of body weight, or 0.5-1 gallons per day. Keep yourself well-hydrated to help clear waste products and toxins more efficiently.
