Dr. Bruce Bowen, MD, FAAFP, Diplomate Obesity Medicine has been a staff member at Aspen Valley Hospital in a variety of capacities since 2000. He is currently a physician at the After-Hours Medical Care clinic in Basalt, where he has practiced since 2009. Dr. Bowen is certified in both family and obesity medicine. He studied medicine at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, graduating in 1979 and completed his residency in family practice in 1982 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Dr. Bowen spent much of the 1980s and 1990s practicing in Mountain View and Sunnyvale California, moving to Colorado in 1999. While in California he had privileges at El Camino Hospital, where he served as chairman of the Department of Family Practice. He had the same role at the Sunnyvale Medical Clinic. In addition, he served as a member of the volunteer clinical faculty at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Bowen has had two private family medicine practices in the Roaring Fork Valley while also working with Aspen Valley Hospital, and practiced bariatric medicine with the Center for Medical Weight Loss until 2019. In addition to private practice, he spent 10 years working as a part-time hospitalist at Aspen Valley Hospital, and he was on the peer review committees for both Aspen Valley and Valley View Hospitals. Dr. Bowen has skied and snowboarded for more than 40 years. He holds a second-degree black belt in Kempo Karate and a third-degree black belt in Soo Bahk Do, and in 1995 was listed in Who’s Who of the American Teachers Association of Martial Arts. He loves photography and has displayed his underwater shots in California and his mountain shots in Aspen.
