Oncology Rehabilitation

Specialized Rehabilitation for Cancer Patients

Experiencing cancer treatment can be a challenging time, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Allow us to walk alongside you and provide the tools and support necessary to help minimize the side effects of cancer treatments.

Established at Aspen Valley Hospital in 2015, the Oncology Rehabilitation Program holistically addresses cancer-related symptoms during and after cancer treatment through cardiovascular exercise, as well as resistance, balance and neuromuscular training in a supportive group environment. Also available to oncology patients is a support group led by Aspen Valley Hospital’s Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

To learn more, please contact the Program Director, Jeanne Stough, MS, EP.

What is Oncology Rehabilitation?

Oncology Rehabilitation is a progressive, individualized exercise program addressing cancer-related symptoms. There are several phases of the rehab program, including resistance training, cardiovascular exercise, core/balance training and group exercise.

Each phase is customized depending on each patient’s specific diagnosis and limitations. The Aspen Valley Hospital Oncology Rehabilitation program provides side-by-side support for those experiencing cancer treatment. Our compassionate team of experts offers individualized exercise programs, tools, and guidance designed to help minimize the side effects of cancer treatments.

Everything You Need To Know About Oncology Rehabilitation

How the Program Works

A referral from a physician is required for admission to this program. Once physician approval is obtained, a Cancer Rehabilitation Specialist conducts an initial assessment to evaluate the specific needs of each patient. An individualized exercise plan is designed for the patient depending on the severity and specificities of any cancer-related symptoms.

Who is Eligible

Patients recovering from or currently undergoing treatment for cancer are eligible. Types of cancers include:

  • Breast
  • Brain
  • Colon/Rectal
  • Gynecologic
  • Head and Neck
  • Leukemia/Lymphoma
  • Lung
  • Prostate
  • Skin
  • Testicular
The Plan

A customized plan will include specific exercises addressing any range of motion deficits, peripheral neuropathy due to treatment or other specific needs.

What to Expect

Patients can expect to exercise two days per week for approximately one hour and use a variety of exercise equipment, including but not limited to treadmills, bicycles, rowing machines and resistance training machines. We will monitor patient vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate and Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE).

Benefits

Your Cancer Rehab Specialist works with you to customize a plan that includes specific exercises addressing any range of motion deficits, peripheral neuropathy due to treatment, or other individual needs.

Research has shown that regular exercise can improve or even alleviate many of the troublesome symptoms that can accompany a cancer diagnosis. Potential benefits patients can achieve through Oncology Rehabilitation are:

  • Decreased fatigue
  • Improved appetite
  • Improved circulation
  • Increased strength and stamina
  • Decreased depression
  • Enhanced sense of well-being

A Path Forward

Patients can continue with our Oncology Rehabilitation Program throughout and following their treatment. Monthly punch cards can be purchased for a nominal fee. Assistance may be available for patients with identified financial need.

While exercise is an important aspect of overall health, it is equally important to live a full, relaxed and balanced life. Oncology Rehabilitation works closely with your doctor and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker to ensure your care addresses physical and emotional needs.
