Telehealth in 2021

What You Need to Know About Virtual Primary Care Visits

A Convenient Way to Meet with a Healthcare Provider

While 2020 came with its fair share of challenges, it also accelerated important trends in healthcare, including telehealth or virtual visits with healthcare providers. Patients and medical providers found great benefit in telemedicine, as well as ways to maximize the virtual experience on both sides of the screen. The result is a healthcare trend that is likely here to stay.

What does telemedicine mean for you?

Aspen Valley Hospital’s renowned network of care encompasses the Upper Roaring Fork Valley and beyond, and now, everything from primary care to multiple medical specialties are available to patients throughout the region via telehealth. This remains a critical aspect to patient care in early 2021, when COVID-19 still remains a risk to public health and vulnerable populations. However, it is worth considering integrating telemedicine into your long-term medical care.

Telemedicine is not suitable for all medical conditions and patients — those experiencing a medical emergency should seek immediate medical attention at AVH’s emergency department. But for patients looking for a convenient way to connect with their primary care provider — including after-hours care — telemedicine is an excellent option.

Benefits of Telehealth:

  • Effective and efficient in treating everyday ailments such as infections, minor injuries, allergies, rashes and similar illnesses
  • Easy access to medical professionals
  • Virtually no waiting time before seeing a doctor
  • Lower costs compared to in-person consultations
  • Convenient lab and screenings review
  • As private and confidential as in-person visits
  • No need to drive to a medical clinic or facility

According to a Q&A with Lucinda Westerlind, AVH’s first telemedicine patient, “I felt secure in terms of privacy and medical recommendations. [Telehealth] was so ideal, because I didn’t have to leave the home and the doctor was able to prescribe care. I have even recommended it to my friends. If you need medical attention, it’s a great alternative to going into the doctor’s office.”

Getting started is easy

So, how does it work?

1. First, you’ll need to make a telemedicine appointment with a participating Aspen Valley Hospital telemedicine healthcare provider.

2. Then, visits can take place through AVH’s Patient Portal or through Zoom. Which platform you use will depend on the clinic or specialist with whom you have an appointment. Patients of Aspen Valley Primary Care, Cardiology, Ophthalmology or Otolaryngology (ENT) will need to be enrolled in Aspen Valley Hospital’s Patient Portal.

3. If using the Patient Portal, you will need to download the Healow app. If using Zoom, you will need to download the Zoom app.

4. After that, a telehealth appointment proceeds like a normal visit with your physician, nurse practitioner or physical therapist.

"We are a rural, critical-access hospital, and our community is separated by mountains, forest fires and viruses. With telemedicine, we can still have appointments even if patients can't get here in person."
